CLAWS has been conducting seminars and discussions on various topics from time to time. Details of our recently conducted events are given in succeeding paras.

 
Activities

CLAWS organised its inaugural seminar on the subject “Army 2020: Shape, Size and Structure and General Doctrine for Emerging Challenges” on 04 and 05 March 2004 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. The event was jointly inaugurated by the three Services Chiefs and attended by a host of defence analysts, academia, media persons, bureaucrats and service officers. CLAWS has been organising a number of events at regular intervals, including an International Seminar in Feb 2007. All of these have well received by the environment.Details of some of the events organosed by CLAWS are given in succeeding paragraphs.

Between July–September 2004, CLAWS had organised a series of brain storming sessions, involving senior retired army officers, at Pune, Bangalore, New Delhi and Chandigarh, to elicit their views on the Army Doctrine, which was then being revised. The sessions were very fruitful as independent and frank views were expressed by the participants.

On 29 and 30 November 2004, a national level seminar on the subject “Special Forces: Doctrine, Structure and Employment across the Spectrum of Conflict in the Indian Context” was organised at the auditorium of the United Service Institution of India, New Delhi. The event was inaugurated by Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Hon’ble Defence Minister, Government of India. The Seminar was attended by leading defence analysts, serving and retired service officers and bureaucrats, defence and military attaches of foreign countries, media persons and some young members of parliament.

The Hon’ble Defence Minister also released the maiden publication effort of the Centre, a book titled “Army 2020: Shape, Size, Structure and General Doctrine for Emerging Challenges” The book has been well received by the environment and has already gone in for a third reprint.

The proceedings of the seminar on Special Forces, including the papers presented therein, have been compiled into a 520 pages book, which was released by Admiral Arun Prakash, PVSM, AVSM, VrC, VM, ADC, Chief of Naval Staff and Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee, at a well attended function on 13 March 2006 at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

During March 2005, CLAWS had organised two seminars, one each at New Delhi and Pune, on the subject “Indian Army Aviation: 2025.” Over 28 leading defence analysts, aviation specialists and aviators from the three Services had participated in the event. Various facets of the Indian Army Aviation Corps, including its restructuring, revitalisation and optimisation to meet the future challenges, were discussed.

On 20 and 21 December 2005, CLAWS along with the National Maritime Foundation and the Centre for Air Power Studies had organised a joint seminar on the topic “Net-Centric Warfare in the Regional Context” at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

This event was the first joint seminar of its kind, involving think-tanks of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. General J J Singh, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, Chief of Army Staff inaugurated the seminar and the Valedictory Address was delivered by Admiral Arun Prakash, PVSM, AVSM, VrC, VSM, ADC, Chief of Naval Staff and Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee.

On 20 and 21 February 2006, CLAWS had organised a seminar on the subject “South Asian Security and Implications for India over the next two Decades”. The event also marked the formal inauguration of the office complex and a newly built conference cum seminar hall of CLAWS, by General JJ Singh, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, Chief of Army Staff. The seminar was very well received.

On 23 and 24 March 2006, CLAWS had organised a seminar on the topic “Countering Low Intensity Conflicts: Need for Revaluation and Reassessment” at the auditorium of the United Service Institution of India, New Delhi. The event underlined the importance of persistent challenges for the country posed by low intensity conflicts. Various facets of low intensity conflicts, including strategic, political, economic, military, legal and ethnic were discussed during the seminar. It was attended by, besides defence analysts, academicians and media persons, the serving officers of all three services, para military forces and police organisations.

CLAWS had organized a day-long seminar on the topic “Power projection Capability: Assessment, Likely Challenges and Suggested Structures” on 05 July 2006 in Delhi Cantt. The event was attended by serving and retired officers of army, navy and airforce and defence analysts.

On 09 August 2006, a day-long seminar was organized on the subject “Command Orientation versus Specialisation: Need for a Balance.” The seminar drew enthusiastic response from the service Headquarters.

On 15 September 2006, a day-long brain storming session was held at CLAWS on the topic “Command Orientation versus Specialisation: Need for a Balance”, to further discuss the points that emerged during the previous seminar.
